BeSMART Secure Storage Counseling for Firearm Safety
This study, called BeSMART Secure Storage Counseling, is looking at ways to encourage safer firearm storage in homes to prevent injuries and deaths in children. Firearm injuries are a leading cause of death for young people, often from unsecured guns. You might be eligible if you are a caregiver of a child (ages 0-17) currently in the hospital, speak English or Spanish, and have access to email and a phone for follow-up. The study will compare two approaches: one group will receive information and a secure storage device for firearms, while the other group will watch a video and get information about safe medication storage. Researchers will measure how many gun owners store their firearms securely and how often participants ask about firearm storage after one month. The study aims to enroll 400 participants.

- Secure firearm storage among gun owners1 month
Self-reported secure storage behavior will be the primary endpoint for gun-owners in the sample. Participants will respond to the survey question of "Please share how the majority (meaning more than half) of the guns (such as pistols, revolvers, shotguns, and rifles) in your home/vehicles are stored." with an ordinal scale of storage (Locked and Unloaded, Locked and Loaded, Unlocked and Unloaded, and Unlocked and Loaded) in decreasing order of safety. Responses will be analyzed comparing Locked and Unloaded to the other three choices for a dichotomous measure.

Self- report based on the survey question "How often do you ask about the presence of firearms in homes where your child(ren) visits?". Response to the survey question is a Likert scale asking frequency (Never-Rarely - Sometimes - Always - Often).
