Fiber and Calcium Absorption in Older Men
This study is looking at how a dietary supplement called soluble corn fiber affects how older men absorb calcium. Researchers want to see if this fiber can help improve bone health, especially since bone fractures are a big problem for older men. They will study 30 older male Veterans to understand if soluble corn fiber increases calcium absorption and how the gut microbiome (the community of tiny organisms in your intestines) might play a role. The main goal is to measure how much calcium is absorbed after 4 and 12 weeks of taking the fiber. You might be able to join if you are a male Veteran aged 60 or older, and do not have certain health conditions like severe kidney disease or very low vitamin D levels.
- Study design
- This is an interventional crossover study, meaning participants will likely receive both the soluble corn fiber and a comparison treatment at different times. The study plans to enroll 30 participants.
- What's involved
- Not specified in the trial record.
- Compensation
- Not stated in the trial record.
- Follow-up
- Calcium absorption will be measured at week 4 and week 12 of study participation, at the end of each treatment phase.
