Michigan Split-belt Treadmill Training for ACL Reconstruction Recovery

This study is exploring a new way to help people recover after Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) reconstruction surgery. Many people tend to put less weight on their surgical knee, which can lead to problems later. This study uses a special treadmill called a split-belt treadmill, where each side moves at a different speed. There are two types of Split-Belt Training being tested: one where the ACL leg's belt moves faster or slower than the other, and a Placebo Split-Belt Training where the ACL leg's belt moves only slightly slower. Researchers want to see if this training can improve how you use your knee, specifically by looking at the knee's loading (sagittal plane knee moment). You might be able to join if you are 14-45 years old, had an ACL reconstruction with an autograft within the last 10 months, and speak English. The study is currently recruiting a small number of participants to gather initial information for a larger future study.

Study design
This is an interventional study with a planned enrollment of 9 participants. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of two Split-Belt Training groups or a placebo group.

Eligibility criteria

Inclusion

aged 14-45 years
suffered an acute, complete ACL rupture as confirmed by MRI and physical exam
have undergone ACL reconstruction w autograft within the past 10 months
willingness to participate in testing and follow-up as outlined in the protocol
English-speaking

Exclusion

inability to provide written informed consent
female subjects who are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant (self-reported)
previous ACL injury
previous surgery to either knee
bony fracture accompanying ACL injury
patients who experienced a knee dislocation
patients who had their ACL reconstructed with an allograft
patients who underwent a multi-ligamentous and/or staged ACL reconstruction
