Observational Study: Barrett's Esophagus in Anorexia Nervosa Binge/Purge Subtype

This study is looking at people with anorexia nervosa who binge and purge to see if they have a condition called Barrett's esophagus (BE). BE is when the lining of the food pipe (esophagus) changes, which can sometimes lead to cancer. Researchers will use a device called EsoGuard to collect cell samples from your esophagus. This device helps check for abnormal cells that might mean you have BE, without needing an endoscopy (a procedure where a tube with a camera is put down your throat). The study aims to find out how many participants test positive for BE after 12 months. You might be able to join if you are 18-65 years old, have an eating disorder with a history of purging for at least 5 years, and purge or ruminate daily. The study is currently unclear on its recruitment status.

Eligibility criteria

Inclusion

Patients diagnosed with an eating disorder diagnosis that includes purging history
Ages 18-65
Purging history =\>5 years
Purging or rumination at a minimum of once daily upon admission.
Admission to the ACUTE Center for Eating Disorders and Severe Malnutrition

Exclusion

Any eating disorder diagnosis that does not include purging behaviors
Ages under 18 and over 65
Patients who otherwise meet the current ACG screening guidelines (chronic GERD and 3 or more risk factors for Barrett's mentioned in the Background)
Received mandated care at time of enrollment
Inability to consent to participate in the research
