Improving Prescribing Decisions for Hospitalized Older Adults

This study is looking at a new way to help doctors make better decisions about medications for older adults (65 and older) who are in the hospital with long-term health problems like diabetes and high blood pressure (hypertension). The study will provide doctors with a special guide called a "Clinical Decision Framework" to help them decide which medications to prescribe. Researchers want to see if this framework helps doctors feel more confident in their prescribing choices and if it leads to fewer changes in patients' home medications for diabetes and high blood pressure when they leave the hospital. This study is currently enrolling doctors who work in general medicine or hospital medicine at specific UPMC hospitals.

Study design
This interventional study plans to involve 150 clinicians. It is designed to see if providing a clinical decision framework changes how doctors prescribe medications.

  • Clinician - Change in Prescribing Self-EfficacyBaseline and three months post-intervention

    For each clinician participant the investigators will ask their self-efficacy to individualize blood pressure and diabetes treatment decisions for hospitalized older adults. Measured through ten 7-point Likert scale questions measured \[Strongly Disagree - Strongly Agree\]. Scores will be summed and range from 10 (all Strongly Disagree) to 70 (all Strongly Agree).
