Studying Metabolism in Women with Obesity
This study aims to understand why women tend to gain weight, especially around the abdomen, during and after menopause. Researchers believe changes in metabolism due to lower estrogen levels might be a reason. This study will compare how the bodies of premenopausal and postmenopausal women respond to different eating patterns. You would participate in three separate 24-hour visits where your energy use is measured while you are eating normally (eucaloric feeding), fasting, or consuming extra calories (overfeeding). The main goal is to see how your energy expenditure (how many calories your body burns) changes under these conditions. This study is for women aged 18 to 65 who have obesity.
- Study design
- This interventional study plans to enroll 56 women. It compares fasting and overfeeding effects on energy expenditure in pre- and postmenopausal women.
- What's involved
- You will complete a 3-day diet run-in before each of three separate 24-hour in-patient visits. During these visits, an IV catheter will be placed for blood draws.
- Compensation
- Not stated in the trial record.
- Follow-up
- Energy expenditure will be measured at 24 hours for each condition. There will be a 1-4-week washout period between conditions.
