Asthma Symptom Perception Study for Older Adults

This study is looking at ways to help older adults with asthma better understand their breathing. People over 60 with asthma are more likely to have serious problems, partly because they might not notice when their airways are getting blocked as much as younger adults do. This study will involve either "PEF Interventional Sessions" or "Control Sessions" over 6 weeks, with some participants also receiving a booster session later. Researchers will measure your peak expiratory flow (PEF) values, which show how fast you can breathe air out, and your daily inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) dose to see if these interventions help improve asthma management. You can join if you are over 60, speak English or Spanish, have had asthma for over a year, and your asthma is not well-controlled. We are looking to enroll 300 participants.

Inclusion

Age \> 60 years
English or Spanish speaking
Self-report or physician diagnosis of asthma \>1 year ago
Uncontrolled asthma

Exclusion

Dementia
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or other chronic respiratory illnesses,
Congestive Heart Failure (CHF, New York Heart Association \[NYHA\] stages 4-5)
Cigarette smoking \>15 packs-years
