Caregivers Preparing for Their Own Health Care Emergency

This study is testing an online program called the Emergency Preparedness Toolkit (EPT) to help caregivers of people with dementia prepare for their own unexpected health issues. Many caregivers focus so much on the person they care for that they might neglect their own health. The EPT aims to guide you in finding and preparing a "standby caregiver" who can step in if you have a health emergency. The goal is to give you peace of mind that the person with dementia will be cared for while you address your own health needs. To join, you must be at least 55 years old, be the spouse or partner of someone with dementia, provide care for them, and live in the same home. The study will measure if participants complete the EPT within six weeks.

Eligibility criteria

Inclusion

Must be 55 years of age or older at the time of signing the informed consent
Must self-identify as the spouse or partner of the PWD (may be subject to independent verification per PI discretion, e.g., medical record review or a signed doctor's note)
Must provide some caregiving to a PWD
Must live in the same dwelling as the PWD

Exclusion

Diagnosis of dementia
Unable to use or does not have access to a computer
Complete deafness or blindness and/or unable to use a telephone
Condition that prevents them from performing caregiving duties or providing physical/emotional support to the PWD
Unable to follow directions
Unable to read or write in English
Participation in prior study involving the EPT
