Early Amiodarone for Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest

This study is looking at whether giving Amiodarone Hydrochloride Injection earlier to people experiencing out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (when the heart suddenly stops beating) due to a specific heart rhythm (ventricular fibrillation or ventricular tachycardia) can improve how quickly the medication is given. Researchers want to see if giving Amiodarone after the second defibrillator shock, at the same time as epinephrine, is better than the usual care protocol, which gives Amiodarone after the third defibrillator shock. You could be eligible if you are 18 or older, have had a non-traumatic out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, and have a specific heart rhythm that doesn't respond to the first defibrillation. The main goal is to measure the time it takes to give Amiodarone. The study is currently unclear on its recruitment status and plans to enroll 585 participants.

Inclusion

Emergency medical services (EMS)-treated non-traumatic out-of-hospital cardiac arrest
Initial rhythm on EMS rhythm assessment of ventricular fibrillation or ventricular tachycardia
Recurrence or persistence of ventricular fibrillation or ventricular tachycardia after one defibrillation attempt

Exclusion

Known allergy to amiodarone
EMS-assessed contraindication to amiodarone
Pre-existing "do-not-attempt-resuscitation" orders
Inter-facility transportations
Initial care by a non-participating EMS agency able to perform advanced life support interventions
Pediatric patient as determined by EMS
Prisoners
Pregnant patients
