NIRS for Predicting Kidney Injury After Cardiac Surgery

This study is looking at whether a special sticker, called a NIRS sensor, can help predict acute kidney injury (AKI) after heart surgery. AKI is a common problem after heart surgery that can affect how well you recover. NIRS sensors use light to measure oxygen levels in tissues. Currently, these sensors are used on the forehead to check brain oxygen. This study wants to see if placing NIRS sensors on the skin over your kidney works better at predicting AKI than placing them on your arm or leg. You might be able to join if you are an adult having heart surgery that requires a heart-lung machine and are at risk for AKI. The study aims to see if NIRS can predict AKI within 7 days after surgery. The study is currently unclear about its recruitment status.

Study design

Inclusion

We will enroll a convenience sample of adult cardiac surgery patients undergoing procedures that require cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) and who are at risk for AKI.

    The objective of this study is to compare perioperative renal NIRS and limb NIRS and determine whether these measurements can predict acute kidney injury in adult cardiac surgery patients. The primary outcome will be the as defined by the Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) guidelines. Measured by an increase in serum creatinine greater than 0.3mg/dl (48 hours) or an increase in serum creatinine greater than 1.5 times baseline (7 days).
