METRICS: Metabolism Evaluation in Bladder Cancer
This observational study, called METRICS, is looking at how your body's energy needs (Resting Energy Expenditure or REE) change during bladder cancer treatment. Researchers want to understand why patients with bladder cancer often experience a decline in physical strength. By monitoring these changes, they hope to find better ways to support patients and improve future care. You may be able to join if you have a confirmed bladder cancer diagnosis, are scheduled for platinum-based chemotherapy followed by surgery (radical cystectomy), and have good kidney and heart function. The study will measure your energy needs from when you enroll until three weeks after your surgery. This information could help doctors detect and treat muscle wasting (cachexia) earlier.
- Study design
- This is an observational study with a planned enrollment of 30 participants. It is not a treatment study but aims to understand changes in energy needs.
- What's involved
- Not specified in the trial record.
- Compensation
- Not stated in the trial record.
- Follow-up
- Your Resting Energy Expenditure will be measured from enrollment until 3 weeks after radical cystectomy.

What this trial measures
- To assess Resting Energy Expenditure (REE) changes across key treatment milestones. From enrollment, prior to chemotherapy, to 3 weeks after radical cystectomy.
Resting Energy Expenditure (REE) will be measured using indirect calorimetry before and after chemotherapy and radical cystectomy and will be associated with clinical outcomes.
