Empagliflozin for Arterial Stiffness in Veterans with Obesity
This study is looking at how empagliflozin, a medication, affects the health of arteries (blood vessels) in Veterans who have obesity. You could be eligible if you are a Veteran between 30 and 60 years old, have obesity (BMI 30-45 kg/m2), and show signs of arterial stiffening. Participants will take either 10mg of empagliflozin daily or a placebo (an inactive pill) for 12 weeks. Researchers will measure your arterial stiffness at the beginning, and then at 4, 8, and 12 weeks to see if empagliflozin makes a difference. The current recruitment status is unclear.

- Carotid-femoral Pulse Wave Velocity (cfPWV)baseline (t0), week 4, week 8, week 12
cfPWV is the gold standard non-invasive index of arterial stiffness. Transit time between carotid and femoral pressure waves is calculated using the foot-to-foot method. cfPWV is calculated as distance traveled by the pulse wave (i.e., femoral location-sternal notch minus sternal notch-carotid location) divided by pulse transit time. All the measurements will be done by the same blinded technician. The goal is to assess changes from baseline when compared to weeks 4,8, and 12 time points.
