Study on Alcohol Consumption Markers

This study aims to understand how a blood marker called Phosphatidylethanol (PEth) can help identify how much and how often someone drinks alcohol. Researchers will give participants a controlled amount of alcohol (Ethanol) to reach a specific blood alcohol level. They will then measure PEth levels and breath alcohol levels over several hours on the day alcohol is given, and continue to track PEth levels for up to 10 days to see how quickly it leaves the body. The goal is to improve how we characterize alcohol use, which could benefit future alcohol prevention and treatment programs. You might be able to join if you are at least 21 years old, have a healthy body mass index, and report drinking alcohol more than once in the last month, with at least one occasion reaching a blood alcohol level of about 0.06%. The current recruitment status is unclear.

Study design
This is an interventional study with a planned enrollment of 80 healthy volunteers. It is not specified if it is randomized or blinded.
What's involved
You will come to the lab to consume alcohol, and blood and breath samples will be collected repeatedly for about 6 hours. You will then need to remain alcohol-free for 10 days while PEth levels are still monitored.
