Alcohol Consumption and Atrial Fibrillation Study

This study is looking at how drinking alcohol affects people with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AFib), which is a type of irregular heartbeat that comes and goes. Researchers want to see if having alcohol leads to more AFib episodes. You would be randomly assigned each day to either avoid alcohol or be allowed to drink alcohol. The study will measure your heart rhythm, alcohol levels, glucose, and fitness over two weeks. To join, you need to be at least 21, comfortable with English, have a smartphone, and have been diagnosed with paroxysmal AFib, with at least one episode in the past month or a healthcare provider's judgment that you could have one. The study aims to enroll 100 participants.

Study design
This is a case-crossover randomized study involving 100 participants. Each participant will be randomly assigned daily to either avoid or not avoid alcohol.
What's involved
You would receive daily random assignments for alcohol consumption, wear an ECG heart monitor, a fitness tracker, an alcohol monitor, and a glucose monitor for up to two weeks. You would also complete daily morning and evening surveys.

Eligibility criteria

Inclusion

Comfortable reading and writing in English
Have a smartphone and willing and able to use the Eureka mobile application
Currently diagnosed with paroxysmal AFib without a plan to change their AFib management during the two-week monitoring period
At least one episode of AFib in the past month OR, in the judgement of a healthcare provider, could potentially have one episode of AF in the next month
Drank alcohol at least 1 day/week on average in the past month
Willing and able to be randomly assigned daily to avoid or not avoid drinking alcohol over a 2-week period
Willing and able to provide written informed consent

Exclusion

Only post-operative AFib
Greater than 40% ventricular pacing
History of alcohol addiction or abuse determined by self-reported history or AUDIT-C score
Intolerance to alcohol
History of liver disease
Currently incarcerated
Currently pregnant or trying to get pregnant

    Participants will be wearing a continuously recording ECG monitor for two weeks. The primary outcome will be the presence (versus absence) of at least one AFib episode on randomly assigned drinking versus non-drinking days.
