Xylitol for C. Difficile in Inflammatory Bowel Disease

This study is looking at whether xylitol, a sugar alcohol, can help clear *Clostridioides difficile* (C. diff) bacteria from the gut in people with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). C. diff can cause serious gut infections. The study will test different doses of xylitol (1g, 2g, 5g, 7g, or 9g) taken daily for 7 days. Researchers want to see if xylitol is safe and effective at getting rid of C. diff colonization after 8 weeks. You might be able to join if you are 18 or older, have IBD that is inactive or mild, and are scheduled for an outpatient colonoscopy at Brigham and Women's Hospital. The study is currently recruiting participants.

Study design
This is a pilot study that will enroll 69 participants. It involves testing different doses of xylitol in a step-by-step manner.
What's involved
Participants will be screened for C. diff during a colonoscopy. If eligible, you will either be in an observational group with assessments at Week 1, 4, and 8, or take xylitol daily for 7 days, with monitoring continuing through Week 8.
Compensation
Not stated in the trial record.
Follow-up
Participants will be monitored for 8 weeks after confirming C. diff colonization or after starting xylitol dosing.
