Bioimpedance for High-Energy Extremity Fractures

This study is looking at how well a device called an EIT (electrical impedance tomography) works for people with high-energy closed extremity fractures (broken bones in arms or legs that haven't broken through the skin). The EIT device uses electrical signals to create images. We want to see if the EIT device is easy to use and acceptable to patients and staff. You can join if you are 18 or older and have a high-energy closed extremity fracture, but not if you have metatarsal (foot bone) fractures, injuries to both lower legs, or an implanted electronic device like a pacemaker. The study is currently unclear on its recruitment status and plans to enroll 30 participants.

Eligibility criteria

Inclusion

Age 18 years or older
High energy closed extremity fracture
Provision of informed consent

Exclusion

Metatarsal fractures
Injury to both lower extremities precluding contralateral imaging
Presence of an implanted electronic device (e.g. pacemaker, vagal stimulator, deep brain stimulator) or electrodes or electrical wires.
Currently pregnant, potentially pregnant, or lactating women

    The primary objective of this work is to explore whether changes in impedance measurement associated with EIT are associated with soft tissue injury and readiness for surgical intervention. EIT is a technique which introduces a small amount of electrical current into biologic tissue through an array of electrodes and measures the change in signal to generate images related to the physiology of that tissue.
