Continuous Glucose Monitoring in Cardiac Surgery

This study is testing how accurate the Dexcom G7 continuous glucose monitor (a device that tracks blood sugar levels) is for adult patients having heart surgery that involves a heart-lung machine (cardiopulmonary bypass). Researchers will compare the readings from the Dexcom G7 to standard blood sugar measurements taken during your surgery and recovery in the intensive care unit. They want to see how well the device works, especially when certain medications (vasopressors), low body temperature (hypothermia), or changes in blood chemistry (acidosis) are present. The goal is to improve how blood sugar is managed in these patients, which could lead to better health outcomes. You can join if you are 18 or older and having this type of heart surgery at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. The study is currently recruiting patients.

Study design
This interventional study plans to enroll 100 adult participants. It will compare the Dexcom G7 continuous glucose monitor readings to standard blood sugar measurements.

18 years of age or older
Undergoing cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center

Exclusion

Under 18 years of age
Pregnant women
Patients with a contraindication to device placement on the posterior arm, including rash, missing extremity, or existing line or device

    Glucose values (mg/dL) from the continuous glucose monitoring will be compared to glucose values obtained from point-of-care arterial blood gas and/or fingerstick capillary glucose measurements.

    Glucose values from the continuous glucose monitoring will be compared to glucose values obtained from point-of-care arterial blood gas measurements when vasopressors are utilized for hemodynamic optimization.
