Training Inner Speech in Children With Developmental Language Disorder

This study is looking at how training children to use "inner speech" (talking to themselves in their minds, also called verbal mediation) might help children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD). DLD is a condition where children have trouble with language. The study will compare two approaches: one where children watch an animated character who talks through their thoughts and actions (Modeling with Verbal Mediation), and another where the character just completes tasks without narrating (Modeling Only). Researchers want to see if teaching children with DLD to use inner speech can improve their executive function (mental skills like planning and problem-solving). They will measure how much children use inner speech and how well they perform on tasks that require shifting attention. The study is currently recruiting 75 children between 8 and 10 years old.

Pass hearing screen bilaterally (20 dB HL, at 1K, 2K, \& 4K)
TILLS Identification Core Score \< 34

Exclusion

KBIT-2 Fluid Subtest Standard Score \< 70
ADHD, Autism, TBI, or other neurological deficits or disorders
