Optimizing Aerobic Fitness in Older Adults after Heart Events

This study is looking at ways to improve fitness in older adults (65 years and older) who have recently had a heart attack (myocardial infarction) or a heart procedure like an angioplasty, stent placement, or valve replacement. Participants will be enrolled in a Phase 2 Cardiac Rehabilitation program. The study compares two types of exercise training: High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and Moderate Intensity Training (MICT). The goal is to see which training method is better at improving your aerobic fitness and physical function, measured by how well you can do a 30-second sit-to-stand test. The study aims to enroll 114 participants.

Study design

Eligibility criteria

Inclusion

\>65 years old
ambulatory
enrolled in CR at our center following a recent clinical diagnosis of myocardial infarction or percutaneous intervention will be recruited

Exclusion

have an active malignancy (excluding non-melanoma skin cancer or low grade prostate cancer under surveillance)
unwilling to comply with the exercise prescription they may be assigned to
have a submaximal performance on entry exercise tolerance test, defined as respiratory exchange ratio \<1.0

    Changes in fitness level (peak oxygen uptake) will be measured from intake to completion of the intervention (4 months after intake).
