This study is looking at different ways to reduce pain when you get an IUD (intrauterine device) placed. Researchers want to see if using different forms of lidocaine (a numbing medication) helps. They are testing buffered lidocaine (lidocaine mixed with sodium bicarbonate), unbuffered lidocaine, Xylocaine jelly (a lidocaine gel), and Surgilube (a placebo gel). You might receive an injection of buffered lidocaine, unbuffered lidocaine, and/or lidocaine gel. The study will measure your pain levels during and after the IUD placement, your satisfaction, and how much empathy you feel your clinician showed. They hope to find out which method is best for pain control. You can join if you are a woman between 18 and 50 years old, speak English, and are getting an IUD for contraception or heavy menstrual bleeding. You cannot have a history of substance use disorders, pain disorders, or be pregnant.
