Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation + Language Therapy for Subacute Aphasia

This study is testing if combining Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) with modified Constraint Induced Language Therapy (mCILT) can help people with aphasia (language problems) after a stroke. Aphasia can make it hard to speak, understand, read, or write. TMS uses magnetic pulses to stimulate specific brain areas, and mCILT helps you practice using your impaired language skills. Researchers want to see if this combination improves overall speech better than mCILT alone. They are also looking for specific characteristics that might help predict who benefits most. You could be eligible if you are 18-85 years old, had a stroke in the left side of your brain 2-6 weeks ago that caused aphasia, and are right-handed and speak English. Eligibility criteria

Inclusion

Left hemisphere stroke resulting in aphasia
The stroke must have occurred between 2 and 6 weeks prior to enrollment
Must be able to understand the nature of the study, and give informed consent
English proficiency
Right-handed

Exclusion

History of serious and/or ongoing issues with substance abuse
Previous head trauma with loss of consciousness for more than 5 minutes
History of major psychiatric illness
Dementia, or other neurological conditions
Epilepsy, or seizure after the stroke event
Pacemaker
Diagnosis of tinnitus
Pregnancy

    Change in performance on the Western Aphasia Battery (WAB-AQ score). WAB AQ Score is out of 100, where a higher score means less language impairment.
