Acetazolamide for Kidney Health in Type 1 Diabetes

This study is looking into how a medication called acetazolamide might help people with Type 1 Diabetes. Researchers want to see if acetazolamide can benefit your kidneys while keeping side effects to a minimum. We will measure changes in how well your kidneys are working using lab tests, specifically looking at your glomerular filtration rate (mGFR), and also track your serum bicarbonate and potassium levels. You can join if you are 18 years or older. The current recruitment status is unclear, but the study plans to enroll 25 participants.

Study design
This is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial. This means participants will receive both acetazolamide and a placebo at different times, and neither you nor the study staff will know which you are receiving at any given time.

You will take either acetazolamide or a placebo twice daily for 10 weeks, have a 2-week break, and then switch to the other treatment for another 10 weeks. You will have Iohexol GFR procedures at the beginning and end of each treatment period to measure your kidney function.
