Quadriceps Strengthening After ACL Reconstruction in Adolescents

This study is looking at ways to improve quadriceps (thigh muscle) strength in teenagers aged 13-17 who have had ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) reconstruction surgery. Researchers are comparing a standard physical therapy program with a program that also includes NMES (neuromuscular electrical stimulation) and BFR (blood flow restriction). NMES uses electrical impulses to help muscles contract, and BFR involves using a cuff to reduce blood flow to the limb during exercise. The main goal is to see how well the quadriceps muscles can produce force and maintain a steady force at 12 and 16 weeks after surgery. You can join if you are 13-17 years old, have had an ACL tear, and no prior knee injuries or conditions that would make NMES or BFR unsafe. The study is currently recruiting 20 participants.

Eligibility criteria

Inclusion

no history of knee injury/surgery of the contralateral limb

Exclusion

(1) bilateral knee injuries
(2) prior knee ligament injury and/or surgery
(3) multiple ligament injuries and/or ruptures
(4) conditions in which NMES and BFR are contraindicated
  • Peak force as measured by isometric knee extension force test12 and 16 weeks post surgery

    Isometric knee extension force will be measured with a dynamometer.
