Healthy School Recognized Campus Study for Youth Physical Activity and Nutrition

This study, called "Healthy School Recognized Campus," is looking at ways to improve physical activity and nutrition in schools for young people aged 8 to 16. It's testing a program called Healthy School Recognized Campus (HSRC) and a mentoring program that helps schools put HSRC into practice. The HSRC program supports schools in offering physical activity and healthy eating programs. Researchers want to see if HSRC helps improve students' body mass index (BMI), and if the mentoring program helps schools use HSRC effectively. The study is currently unclear on its recruitment status.

Study design
This study is an interventional, cluster dual randomized controlled trial involving 20 schools in Central and East Texas. Schools are randomly assigned to either receive the HSRC program or be on a waitlist, and also to receive the mentoring program immediately or later.
What's involved
Participants will have their Body Mass Index (BMI) measured at the beginning of the study and again after 9 months.
Compensation
Not stated in the trial record.
Follow-up
Participants will be followed for 9 months after the start of the study.

  • Body mass index (BMI)Baseline, 9 months

Weight will be measured with a scale (in pounds), and height will be measured using a stadiometer (in inches). Weight and height will be combined to report BMI as follows, BMI = (weight (lb)/height (inches)2) x 703.

  • Acceptability of the HSRC programBaseline, 9 months

Acceptability will be assessed using the Acceptability of Intervention Measure (AIM) 4-item survey. The survey will be used to assess program implementers' perceived acceptability of the program (i.e., This program seems fine.)

  • Appropriateness of the HSRC programBaseline, 9 months

Appropriateness will be assessed with the Intervention Appropriateness Measure (IAM) 4-item survey. The survey will assess program implementers' perception of the appropriateness of the program (e.g., This program seems suitable.)

  • Feasibility of the HSRC programBaseline, 9 months

Feasibility will be assessed using the Feasibility of Intervention Measure (FIM) 4-item survey. The survey will assess program implementers' perception of the program's feasibility (e.g., This program seems doable.)
