Using an AI Mobile App to Encourage Healthy Eating

This study is looking at how well a mobile app that uses artificial intelligence (AI) can help young adults make healthier food choices. The app comes in two versions: one that just tracks your food intake and another, called the 'gamified' version, that also gives you tips and 'nudges' to eat better. Researchers want to see if the gamified app is easier and more enjoyable to use, and if it leads to better eating habits. You would use one of these apps for six weeks to record everything you eat. The study is currently enrolling healthy UC Davis students aged 18-24.

Study design
This is an interventional study planning to enroll 114 participants. You would be randomly assigned to use either the gamified app or the basic dietary assessment app.
What's involved
You would use your smartphone to record all foods consumed using the assigned app for a period of six weeks.
Compensation
Not stated in the trial record.
Follow-up
Your app adherence will be assessed at 3 weeks and 6 weeks, and app acceptability and usability will be measured at the end of the 6-week period.

  • App acceptability by version assigned to participantsMeasured at endline: at the end of the 6 week period

Acceptability will be assessed using a structured questionnaire based on a Likert scale from 1 (strongly agree) to 5 (strongly disagree) administered at the end of the study period.

  • App's usability by version assigned to participantsMeasured at endline: at the end of the 6 week period

Focus group discussions will be conducted with a select group of participants to assess usability (i.e. facilitators and barriers to app usage) at the end of the study period.

  • App adherence rates by version assigned to participantsAssessed at midline (3 weeks) and endline (6 weeks)

App usage adherence will be evaluated based on analytics data, with a 70% usage threshold defined for both the midline and endline assessments.
