Virtual Balance Intervention for Fall Prevention in Older Veterans

This study is looking at ways to reduce falls in older Veterans. Falls are a big health concern, especially for Veterans. Researchers are testing a "Multi-modality Balance Intervention" which involves virtual group balance classes focusing on movement and obstacle negotiation three times a week for three months. Some participants will also join "Gerofit," a virtual wellness program with warm-ups, aerobic training, and strength training, three times a week for up to 12 months. The study wants to see if these programs improve your balance and hip abductor strength (muscles in your hip that help with balance). You might be able to join if you are a Veteran, 65 or older, have a VA primary care provider, are enrolled in the VA Maryland Health Care System, and are at risk for falls. The study is currently unclear on its recruitment status and plans to enroll 110 participants.

The four-square step test will be used as a measure of balance. The change in the amount of time it takes to complete the four-square step test comparing pre and post-intervention.

  • Isometric Hip Abductor Strength3-months

A measure of the maximal isometric muscle strength produced in hip abductor muscles will be assessed with a handheld dynamometer device. Pre-test levels will be compared to post-intervention levels.
