Early Cochlear Implant Use Study
This observational study is looking at how people who are new cochlear implant users learn to hear. We want to see if your ability to tell simple sounds apart changes and if that helps you understand speech better. You'll complete "take-home" tests using special equipment for the first three months after your cochlear implant is turned on. Then, you'll have a few more tests in a lab for up to a year. We're looking for adults aged 18 to 85 who have severe or profound hearing loss and are getting a cochlear implant for the first time. We want to see how your hearing changes and your speech understanding improves during this early period.
- Study design
- This is an observational study, meaning researchers will watch and record information without giving a specific treatment. It plans to include 25 participants.
- What's involved
- You will complete about 25 "take-home" test sessions over the first 3 months after your cochlear implant is activated. You will then have 3 more tests in a laboratory until 1 year after activation.
- Compensation
- Not stated in the trial record.
- Follow-up
- You will be followed for 1 year after your cochlear implant is activated.

What this trial measures
- Change in percentage of correct responses during speech perception testsBaseline, 1 year
Speech perception tests involves presentation of a speech stimulus (may be a word, sentence, nonsense words, or other speech sounds) and subjects will have to indicate what they heard. The total score is the percentage of speech stimulus correctly understood, ranging from 0-100%.
