Synovial Fluid Withdrawal or PRP Injection for Acute ACL Tears

This study is looking at how removing excess fluid from your knee or injecting Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) affects swelling after a sudden tear of your anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Researchers want to see if these procedures change the healing factors in your knee joint fluid. You might be able to join if you are between 18 and 50 years old, speak English, have a recently torn ACL with swelling, and are scheduled for ACL reconstruction surgery. The main goal is to measure the concentration of a specific cytokine (a protein that affects cells) called Collagen Type II, from when you join until your surgery. The study is currently unclear on its status and plans to enroll 99 participants.

Eligibility criteria

Inclusion

Age 18 - 50
English-speaking
Clinical evidence of ACL rupture with swelling
Participant must be undergoing ACL reconstruction surgery

Exclusion

Age \<18 or \>50
Presentation \>3 weeks after initial injury
Previous traumatic ipsilateral (same side) knee injury consistent with chronic ACL tear or prior ACL surgery
\> Kellgren-Lawrence grade 2 changes on preoperative x-ray
History of hemophilia or inflammatory arthropathy (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis)
