The IMPACT Study: Personalized Physical Therapy for Hernia Recovery

This study, called The IMPACT Study, is looking at whether personalized physical therapy (PT) can help people recover better and strengthen their core muscles after surgery for a ventral hernia. A ventral hernia is when an organ pushes through a weak spot in your abdominal (belly) muscles. You might be able to join if you are between 18 and 75 years old, have a ventral hernia between 4 and 10 centimeters, and are scheduled for surgery for it. The study will compare a group receiving personalized PT (exercise, manual therapy, and education) to a group receiving usual care (education only). Researchers want to see if personalized PT improves core strength, movement, and overall quality of life after 3 months and up to a year after surgery.

Eligibility criteria

Inclusion

Participants must be aged 18-75.
Diagnosed clinically or via objective testing by a surgeon with a ventral transverse hernia \>4 cm and \<10 cm.
Scheduled for elective surgical correction of a non-recurrent, primary or incisional ventral hernia.
Independent functional status.

Exclusion

Individuals currently receiving or who have received PT within the last 30 days.
Individuals currently using an assistive device for ambulation.
Individuals diagnosed with a neurologic disorder will be excluded.
History of or plan for Botox injection or muscle release related to the hernia.
Pregnancy
