College Student Alcohol Behaviors and Strategies Study

This study is looking at ways to help college students reduce risky drinking behaviors. Researchers want to see if teaching students about "Protective Behavioral Strategies" (PBS) – actions taken before, during, or after drinking to reduce harm – can help them drink less alcohol and experience fewer negative consequences. You would learn about PBS, and some participants would also set personal goals for using these strategies. The study is open to college students aged 18-25 who drink alcohol at least once a week. Success will be measured by how often participants use PBS, their alcohol consumption, and any negative alcohol-related consequences over a two-week period. The current recruitment status is unclear.

Study design
This is an interventional study planning to enroll 300 participants. It compares a control group, a group learning Protective Behavioral Strategies (PBS), and a group learning PBS with goal-setting.
What's involved
You would receive information about Protective Behavioral Strategies and potentially set personal goals. Your PBS use, alcohol consumption, and negative alcohol-related consequences will be measured at the start and after two weeks.
Compensation
Not stated in the trial record.
Follow-up
Participants will be followed for two weeks after the initial assessment.

Must report engaging in alcohol use at least one time per week over the past two weeks, on average

  • Protective Behavioral Strategy UseBaseline and two-week follow-up.

Participants will be asked at baseline and follow-up to indicate the frequency they use the various PBS included in the Protective Behavioral Strategies Scale - 20 (PBSS-20) across the past two weeks. Change will be examined across groups as the mean change in past-two-week frequency of PBS use at follow-up relative to baseline.

  • Alcohol UseBaseline and two-week follow-up

Participants will be asked to complete the Timeline Follow-Back (TLFB), a measure of past-two-week alcohol use, at baseline and follow-up. Change will be examined across groups as mean change in past-two-week alcohol use at at follow-up relative to baseline.

  • Negative Alcohol-Related ConsequencesBaseline and two-week follow-up

Participants will be asked to report on the total number of negative alcohol-related consequences they have experienced in the past two weeks using the Brief Young Adult Alcohol Consequences Questionnaire (B-YAACQ). Change will be examined across group as the mean change in number of negative alcohol-related consequences experienced across the past two weeks at follow-up relative to baseline.

  • Positive Alcohol-Related ConsequencesBaseline and two-week follow-up

Participants will be asked to report on the number of positive alcohol-related consequences they have experienced across the past two weeks at baseline and follow-up using the Positive Drinking Consequences Questionnaire (PDCQ). Change across groups will be examined as the mean change in number of positive alcohol-related consequences at follow-up relative to baseline.
