Preventing Vaping and Prescription Drug Misuse in Elementary School Students

This study is testing a school-based program called a "hybrid intervention" to help prevent vaping, e-cigarette use, and prescription drug misuse among students aged 7 to 11. This program combines traditional classroom lessons with online learning modules. The goal is to see if this program can reduce these risky behaviors and improve students' attitudes and understanding about them. We'll compare students who receive this program to those who get their usual health education. The study aims to enroll 3000 students. The current status of the study is unclear.

Study design
This is a randomized controlled trial involving 30 upper elementary schools. Schools will be randomly assigned to either receive the hybrid intervention or continue with their usual health education.
What's involved
Students will participate in classroom sessions and online e-learning modules. They will also complete surveys before the program, right after it finishes, and again 6 months later.
Compensation
Not stated in the trial record.
Follow-up
Participants will be followed for 6 months after completing the intervention to assess changes in behaviors, norms, and attitudes.

  • Vaping, e-cigarette use, and prescription drug misuse behaviors, norms, and attitudes at baselinePre-test (prior to participating in the first session/module of the intervention)

The investigators will assess (via questionnaire) key study variables including behaviors, norms, attitudes, and knowledge regarding vaping, e-cigarette use, and prescription drug misuse behaviors and hypothesized risk and protective factors. These outcomes will be examined and compared in both the intervention group and the control group.

  • Change in baseline baseline vaping, e-cigarette, and prescription drug misue behaviors, norms, and attitudes at post-interventionPost-test (within 2 weeks of completing final session/module of the intervention)
