Studying Muscle Weakness and Exercise in Women

This study aims to understand how muscle weakness develops when an arm is temporarily immobilized and if exercising the other arm (called cross-education) can help. Researchers will compare women aged 40-65 who have their non-dominant wrist immobilized for 7 days. Some will also do resistance training on their dominant hand during this time. After the immobilization, all participants will complete a 2-week rehabilitation program for the immobilized arm. The main goal is to see how handgrip strength and wrist strength change over time. You might be able to join if you are a woman between 40-65 years old and have a baseline handgrip strength above 16Kg. The study is currently unclear on its recruitment status.

Study design
This is a randomized controlled study with 20 women aged 40-65. Participants will be assigned to either a group that does resistance training or a control group.
What's involved
You would have your non-dominant wrist immobilized with a cast for 7 days. If in the training group, you would do three resistance training sessions with your dominant arm during this week. Inclusion

Women between 40-65 years of age
Baseline handgrip strength \>16Kg

Exclusion

Personal or family history of blood clots
Current use of anticoagulant medications
Neuromuscular or metabolic diseases (e.g., multiple sclerosis, diabetes)
Arthritis
Osteoporosis or osteopenia
History of myocardial infarction within the past year
Chronic pain ≥3/10 for ≥3 months
Uncontrolled hypertension (≥140/90 mmHg)
Upper extremity surgery within the past year
Use of assistive hand or arm device within the past year
Fall involving the upper extremities within the past year
Upper extremity injuries preventing safe participation
Current use of muscle relaxants, benzodiazepines, or similar drugs
Smoking within the past 6 months
History of drug or alcohol abuse within the past year
Severe anxiety or claustrophobia
Pregnancy (current or planned)
Allergies to medical adhesives
High risk of sarcopenia (per SARC-F)
Contraindications to TMS or MRI
Upper-body resistance training within the past 6 months
Inability/unwillingness to refrain from resistance training during study
