Evaluating Eye Gaze Sharing for Kidney Stone Surgery Training

This study is testing a new tool called augmented reality (AR) to help surgeons learn how to perform endoscopic kidney stone surgery. AR markers will show surgical trainees where an expert surgeon is looking during the kidney exploration part of the surgery. The goal is to see if this helps trainees find all the kidney stones, which could reduce the need for repeat surgeries. This study is for adult residents and attending urologists at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, as well as adult patients with kidney stones who are scheduled for endoscopic surgery. The main goal is to measure how completely the kidney is explored within 1-10 minutes. The current recruitment status is unclear.

Study design
This is an interventional study planning to enroll 110 participants. Trainees and expert surgeons will be randomly assigned to either a control or experimental group.

Eligibility criteria

Inclusion

Surgeons who are "adult" residents and attending urologists at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in the age range 18 to 65
Patients who are adults with kidney stones scheduled for endoscopic surgery as clinically indicated.

Exclusion

Vulnerable populations, including incarceration status, pregnancy, inability to give informed consent, and serious illness likely to cause death within 5 years
