Observational Study: Colonoscopy for Parkinson's Disease Detection
This study is looking into a new way to detect Parkinson's disease earlier. Doctors are trying to find a protein called alpha-synuclein in small tissue samples taken from your colon during a routine colonoscopy. Currently, Parkinson's is diagnosed based on symptoms like tremors, but by then the disease has already progressed. Finding a way to detect it sooner could help doctors start treatments earlier. You can join if you are 40-99 years old, have a confirmed Parkinson's diagnosis, and are already scheduled for a routine colonoscopy for colon cancer screening or other medical reasons. The main goal is to see if this protein can be found in your colon tissue at the time of your colonoscopy.
- Study design
- This is an observational study with 20 participants. It aims to see if a specific protein can be detected in colon tissue samples.
- What's involved
- You will complete questionnaires, take a smell test, and provide a stool sample before your colonoscopy. During your routine colonoscopy, doctors will take 4 additional small tissue samples from your colon.
- Compensation
- Not stated in the trial record.
- Follow-up
- Detection of the protein is measured at the time of the colonoscopy procedure.
