Opioid Tapering Before Spine Surgery
This study is looking at ways to help people who take opioids regularly and are scheduled for spine surgery. It compares two approaches: opioid tapering (gradually reducing opioid use) with education alone, versus opioid tapering with education plus cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which is a type of talk therapy. The goal is to see how many people in each group successfully reach their opioid tapering goals before surgery. You could be eligible if you are at least 18, scheduled for major spine surgery at least 4 weeks away, and take between 40 and 200 oral morphine equivalents daily. The study is currently unclear on its recruitment status.
- Study design
- This is a randomized, controlled pilot study with 45 participants. Participants will be assigned to one of two groups.
- What's involved
- You would meet with a pain physician to plan your tapering schedule. If in the CBT group, you would also have two telemedicine CBT appointments before surgery.
- Compensation
- Not stated in the trial record.
- Follow-up
- The main goal is measured before surgery (postoperative day 0).

What this trial measures
- proportion that achieved opioid tapering goalPerioperative prior to surgery (postoperative day 0)
Achievement of the opioid tapering goal for each patient will be assessed on day of surgery and will be based on average daily OMEs taken during the three days before surgery. The opioid tapering goal will be made on the initial visit with the study pain physician and will be specific to each patient.
