Observational Study on Opioid Timing and Breathing After Surgery

This study is looking at how the timing of opioid pain medication affects breathing problems after surgery. Researchers want to see if there's a link between when you receive an opioid and changes in your breathing, specifically a decrease in how much air you breathe out (minute ventilation). They will use a non-invasive monitor to track your breathing. You might be able to join if you are between 18 and 85 years old, having general anesthesia for at least 2 hours, and are expected to receive opioids for pain after surgery. Eligibility criteria

Inclusion

Written informed consent
Adults ≥18 years of age and ≤85 years of age
Patients planned for general anesthesia with an expected anesthetic time of at least 2 hours
Patients expected to receive postoperative opioid analgesia

Exclusion

Non-operative procedure (imaging)
Patients not admitted to the PACU postoperatively
Use of patient-controlled analgesia systems
Female patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding
Patients with asymmetric lung disease
American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) classification V
Emergency surgery (ASA E Modifier)
