Comparing Dexamethasone and Prednisone for Asthma in the Emergency Department
This study is looking at adults who come to the emergency department (ED) with an asthma attack. It compares two ways to give steroids: a single shot of Dexamethasone (16mg IM) or taking Prednisone (60mg by mouth) for 5 days. The goal is to see if the single shot of Dexamethasone works just as well as the 5-day Prednisone course in preventing you from needing to return to the ED for asthma. You could join if you are 18 or older, have asthma, and are discharged from the ED after an asthma attack where you received steroids. The study will measure your Asthma Control Test Score within 4 weeks after you leave the hospital to see how well your asthma is managed. The current status of this study is unclear.

- Asthma Control Test ScoreWithin 4 Weeks post-discharge, up to 28-30 days
Asthma control will be assessed via administration of the Asthma Control Test (ACT) questionnaire at 4 weeks post-discharge. The ACT questionnaire is comprised of 5 questions which ask participants to recall how asthma symptoms have affected them over the prior 4 weeks. Responses to the 5 questions are rated on a 5-point Likert scale ranging from 1-5, yielding an overall possible scoring range of 5-25. Higher ACT scores are indicative of better asthma control. For this study, an ACT score \>19 indicates well-controlled asthma. Scores will be summarized by study arm using basic descriptive statistics.
