Understanding Dystonia and Deep Brain Stimulation in Children

This study aims to better understand childhood dystonia, a movement disorder, and how it develops. Researchers want to learn how brain network activity changes in children with dystonia as they grow. They also want to see how Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) affects brain function in children who have this treatment. Participants will undergo non-invasive tests like EEG and EMG (which measure brain and muscle activity) while resting and doing a simple movement task. Children who have DBS will be tested both with their stimulation on and off. The study will track changes in brain network activity over an average of two years. This study is for children and young adults aged 6 to 21 years old who have dystonia (with or without DBS) or are typically developing and do not have any neurological conditions. The study plans to enroll 75 participants.

Inclusion

For dystonia subjects:
Dx of dystonia (with and without DBS)
willingness and ability to complete study protocols.
For Typically Developing Controls:
normal developmental milestones
absence of any neuropsychiatric disorder
no significant medical condition.

Exclusion

history of epilepsy
presence of implanted medical devices (except DBS in dystonia subjects)
lack of cognitive or physical ability to complete study protocol.
