Comparing Treatments for Lateral Elbow Pain (Tennis Elbow)

This study is comparing two different approaches for treating lateral elbow pain, also known as tennis elbow. One approach uses "Think in Nerve Length and Layers" (TINLL) techniques, which focus on relieving tension in the radial nerve. The other approach uses traditional techniques to stretch and strengthen muscles. You would be assigned to one of these groups based on any past treatments you've had for your elbow pain. Researchers want to see which treatment is more effective at reducing your pain and improving your grip strength. Success will be measured by your own ratings of your tennis elbow, your pain-free grip strength, and your pain level over 4 weeks.

Study design
This interventional study plans to enroll 68 adults aged 18 or older who have lateral elbow pain. You will be assigned to either the TINLL treatment group or the traditional treatment group based on your past medical history.
What's involved
You will receive treatment once a week for 4 to 6 weeks, or less if you respond well. Before starting, you will complete four common tests for elbow pain, which take no longer than 15 minutes.

Eligibility criteria

Inclusion

understanding of English language; adults 18 years of age or older
referral for lateral sided elbow pain or lateral epicondylitis
subjects positive on one of the following (tenderness over lateral epicondyle with palpation
pain with stretch of long wrist extensors
pain with resisted wrist or middle finger extension)

Exclusion

subjects unable to cognitively follow directions
have a legally-mandated reporter
subjects scheduled for surgery, or post-up surgical patients
subjects with carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome/medial elbow pain,
subjects who received Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) or percutaneous needle tenotomy (PNT)
