Sodium Bicarbonate as an Alternative to Potassium Citrate for Kidney Stones

This study is looking at whether sodium bicarbonate could be a good alternative to potassium citrate for people with kidney stones. Many people have trouble taking potassium citrate because it can be expensive, and this study wants to see if sodium bicarbonate, which is cheaper, can also help prevent stones by changing your urine. You might be able to join if you are an adult over 18, have a history of kidney stones (nephrolithiasis), and have low citrate levels in your urine (hypocitraturia). The main goal is to see how much your 24-hour urinary citrate excretion changes after 14 days of treatment with either sodium bicarbonate or potassium citrate. The current recruitment status is unclear, and the study plans to enroll 30 participants.

Eligibility criteria

Inclusion

Adult \>18 years of age
History of nephrolithiasis
One 24h urine collections within one year of enrollment with hypocitraturia.
Patients currently utilizing or considering use of Kcit for stone prevention

Exclusion

Individuals with known metabolic disorders
Individuals with other known causes of nephrolithiasis
Anyone who, in the opinion of the PI, is unfit or unsuitable to participate in the study
