Understanding Learning and Memory in Epilepsy
This study aims to understand how your brain learns and uses abstract ideas, like memories, to help you in new situations. Researchers are using special equipment, including the Cedrus RB-844 response pad, Adtech Behnke-Fried micro-electrodes, Neurolynx electrophysiology system, and Blackrock Cerestim stimulator, to record your brain activity and responses while you do simple tasks. The study is for adults aged 18 and older who have intractable epilepsy (epilepsy that doesn't respond to treatment) and are already undergoing invasive monitoring. To join, you need to have an IQ over 70 and be able to follow simple instructions. The main goals are to see how brain cells work together to learn abstract ideas, how these ideas help you adapt to new situations, and how electrical stimulation affects this process. The study plans to enroll 114 participants, but its current status is unclear.
- Study design
- This is an interventional study with an unclear status, planning to enroll 114 participants. It involves recording brain activity and responses while participants perform cognitive tasks.
- What's involved
- You will perform various cognitive tests on a computer during your hospital stay. This involves pressing buttons in response to questions.
- Compensation
- Not stated in the trial record.
- Follow-up
- The primary endpoints, including neuronal activity and the effects of electrical stimulation, will be measured at 3 years.

What this trial measures
- Neuronal population activity3 years
Proportion of experiment sessions in which abstract representation emerged following successful learning of the task by the subject.
- Facilitation of generalization3 years
Strength of correlation between the presence of abstract representations at the neuronal level and the subjects ability to perform generalization.
- Effect of electrical stimulation3 years
Proportion of experiment sessions in which electrical stimulation to the hippocampus disrupted abstract representations.
