RESTORE Trial: Lung Cancer Screening Support for Black Individuals

This study, called the RESTORE trial, is testing a special decision-making support program for Black individuals to see if it increases their participation in lung cancer screening (LCS). Lung cancer is a major health concern for Black men and women. LCS, which uses yearly low-dose CT scans, is recommended for people aged 50-80 with a history of smoking. While LCS can significantly reduce lung cancer deaths, many minority groups don't complete it. This program is designed specifically for Black individuals to address their needs. To join, you must identify as Black or African American, be between 50-77 years old, have smoked for at least 20 pack-years, and have used commercial tobacco within the last 15 years. You should not have had a chest CT in the past year or a personal history of lung cancer. The study will measure how acceptable the program is and how much participants learn about LCS.

Inclusion

Identify as Black or African American
Between ages 50-77
Self-reported 20-pack year smoking history
Ongoing commercial tobacco use within the past 15 years
Proficiency in the English language

Exclusion

Has a documented chest CT within the past one year
Personal history of lung cancer or symptoms associated with lung cancer
  • Intervention acceptabilityAt post-intervention (Day 1)

    Assessed using the Acceptability of Intervention Measure (AIM). The AIM will be summarized and presented as a range of scores from 1 (low acceptability/appropriateness) to 5 (high acceptability/appropriateness).

  • Lung cancer screening knowledgeAt pre- and post-intervention (both on Day 1)

    Will be assessed using the Lung Cancer Screening Knowledge 7 question score. Pre- and post-intervention responses will be compared via Chochran-Mantel-Haenszel and Friedman tests.
