Adapting Remote High-Intensity Resistance Exercise and Sleep Monitoring in Parkinson's Disease

This study is exploring a new way to deliver high-intensity resistance exercise (rHIRE) to people with Parkinson's disease (PD) from their homes. We know that exercise helps manage PD symptoms, but getting to exercise programs can be tough. This study aims to adapt an exercise program that previously improved sleep in people with PD, making it available remotely. Researchers will also test how easy it is to use a device that monitors sleep from home. You might be able to join if you live in Colorado, have a PD diagnosis, need little help at home, and have internet and a video-capable device. Success in this study means that the remote exercise program is acceptable and that the sleep monitoring device is usable. The study is currently unclear on its recruitment status and plans to enroll 16 participants.

Eligibility criteria

Inclusion

Currently residing in Colorado, USA
PD diagnosis per Movement Disorders Society Diagnostic Criteria
Requiring less than minimal assistance at home
Having internet access
Having a video-capable device

Exclusion

Uncontrolled cardiovascular disease or pulmonary disease
Musculoskeletal injuries
Participation in Parkinson's Disease community exercise programs more than 3 days a week
Contraindication to physical activity as determined by the Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (PAR-Q)
Fall risk defined by requiring \>20 seconds to complete the 5 times sit to stand test14 or high frequency of falls within the past year (≥ one fall per month)
Virtual Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) score ≥ 18 (performed at the eligibility visit)

    Participants will complete an acceptability survey after the completion of the exercise intervention
