Observing Breathing Patterns in Premature Infants Before and After Extubation

This study is looking at how premature infants (born at 32 weeks gestation or earlier) breathe before and after their breathing tube is removed (extubation). Researchers will observe the baby's "work of breathing" (how hard or easy they breathe) using soft, elastic bands placed on their chest and abdomen. These bands measure how well the chest and abdomen move together during breathing. The goal is to see if these measurements can better predict which babies are ready to have their breathing tube removed successfully, compared to current methods. This study is for premature infants who are currently on a breathing tube and whose medical team is considering removing it. The study aims to enroll 30 infants.

Eligibility criteria

Inclusion

premature infants (born at ≤32 weeks gestation) who are intubated.
medical team is evaluating the baby for extubation readiness

Exclusion

Infants with skeletal, neuromuscular, or abdominal surgical disorders that affect the accuracy of RIP measurements will be excluded.

    The primary objective of this study is to compare work of breathing indices before and after extubation in intubated premature infants admitted to the Christiana Care Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. We will observe work of breathing for 5-10 minutes before the infant is extubated and 5-10 minutes after the infant is extubated.
