Increasing Lung Cancer Screening in Community Health Centers (LungSMART)

This study, called LungSMART, aims to help more people get screened for lung cancer, especially in community health centers. It's testing different ways to encourage people to get a low-dose CT scan (LDCT) for lung cancer. You might receive text messages, access to a chatbot for questions, or an educational video about lung cancer screening. The study also looks at how patient navigators can help you schedule and complete your screening. You could be eligible if you are between 50 and 80 years old, speak English or Spanish, are a current or former smoker, and are a patient at one of the participating community health centers. The study will measure how many people complete an eligibility assessment and then how many complete the actual lung cancer screening.

Eligibility criteria

Inclusion

Is currently a patient at participating CHCs
Speak English or Spanish
Current or former tobacco smoker
Male or Female
Age 50-80
Electronic health records indicate they have not opted out of receiving text contact from the clinic
Has a phone that can receive text messages

Exclusion

Persons with lung cancer or who have previously participated in a Shared Decision Making discussion with a health provider regarding lung cancer or have completed LCS.

What this trial measures

  • Stage 1: Completion of eligibility assessmentup to 18 weeks

    To evaluate patient-level interventions with respect to increasing completed assessments in Stage 1. The outcome measure will report the proportion of participants who complete the LCS eligibility assessment.

  • Stage 2: Completion of LCSup to 30 weeks

    To evaluate patient-level interventions with respect to increasing completed LCS in Stage 2. The outcome measure will report the proportion of participants who complete LCS.
