Improving Law Enforcement Use of AEDs for Cardiac Arrest

This study is looking at whether a special online video, called an AED training adjunct, can help law enforcement officers feel more confident and be more likely to use an automated external defibrillator (AED) when someone has a heart attack (cardiac arrest). The researchers also want to see if this training can help reduce differences in how often AEDs are used on women. You can join if you are a law enforcement officer aged 18 or older from the greater Portland area. The study will measure if your confidence to use an AED changes right after the video, and then will track how often AEDs are used over 18 months. The current recruitment status is unclear.

Study design
This is an interventional study with a planned enrollment of 30 participants. It is a pilot study examining an education intervention.

aged 18 years of age and older

    The primary training outcome is, "I am confident I can always attach AED pads in the correct position on a woman". This question is a modified question from a validated tool to measure changes in self-efficacy, the Basic Resuscitation Skills Self-Efficacy Scale, which measures "can do" using 0-100.

  • Change in AED ApplicationProspectively over 18 months following AED training intervention

    Our primary care outcome is, change in AED application by law enforcement among adult cases with law enforcement on-scene before Emergency Medical Services (EMS) arrival overall and stratified by gender relative to the same geographic region in the preceding 5-year period. The outcome will be measured using the Portland Cardiac Arrest Epidemiologic Registry (PDX Epistry), an existing observational registry used for quality improvement and research.
