Brain and Sensory Stimulation for Primary Progressive Aphasia

This study is looking at whether special types of brain and sensory stimulation can help people with primary progressive aphasia (PPA), a condition that affects language. Researchers want to see if transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS), which uses gentle electrical currents, or multisensory stimulation (light and/or sound flickers) can improve verbal short-term memory (STM). You might be able to join if you are 45 or older, have a diagnosis of PPA or mild cognitive impairment (MCI) without problems with daily activities, and have had a recent cognitive exam. The study will compare active tACS to a sham (fake) tACS to see if the active treatment helps. It will also compare memory before and after multisensory stimulation. The goal is to see if these methods can improve language outcomes.

Eligibility criteria

Inclusion

Clinical exam supports diagnosis of PPA and/or MCI with no report of difficulty functioning in basic or instrumental activities of daily living.
Completed clinical cognitive exam within 6 months of study baseline visit OR neuropsychological research battery within 6 months of study baseline visit.

Exclusion

Evidence of dementia at baseline
Known history of neoplasm, symptomatic stroke, moderate to severe traumatic brain injury, or other significant neurologic event
Age \<45 years.
Evidence of severe psychiatric illness (e.g., bipolar disorder, schizophrenia).
Presence of cardiac stimulators or pacemakers
Any other implants near the scalp or in the eye
Contraindications to MRI or stimulation
Pregnancy
History of ongoing or unmanaged seizures
History of dyslexia or other developmental learning disabilities
