Coherence Breathing Before Exercise Testing

This study is looking at whether a special type of breathing, called Coherence Breathing, can affect how your body responds to exercise. Participants will do 5 minutes of guided Coherence Breathing (breathing in for 5 seconds and out for 5 seconds) or 5 minutes of regular, quiet breathing. Afterwards, you'll do a maximal exercise test on a treadmill. Researchers will measure your peak oxygen consumption to see if Coherence Breathing makes a difference. You can join if you are an adult between 19 and 45 years old, recreationally active, and can do treadmill exercise. The study aims to enroll 20 people, but its current recruitment status is unclear.

Study design

Eligibility criteria

Inclusion

Adults aged 19 to 45 years.
Any biological sex.
Recreationally active, defined as accumulating at least 3 hours per week of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity.
Able to perform maximal cardiopulmonary exercise testing on a treadmill.
Able to provide informed consent.
Cleared for moderate-to-vigorous physical activity based on the PAR-Q+ (or PAR-Q 2023).

Exclusion

Accumulate less than 3 hours per week of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity.
Presence of a health condition that contraindicates maximal exercise testing, including:
Acute illness that would interfere with participation or exercise testing.
Inability or unwillingness to complete study procedures.
Inability or unwillingness to provide informed consent.
Not cleared for moderate-to-vigorous physical activity based on the PAR-Q+ (or PAR-Q+ 2023).
