AROMA-NT: Essential Oils and Wearable TENS Device for Chronic Nausea

This study, called AROMA-NT, is looking at how two non-prescription therapies might help adults who experience chronic (long-lasting) nausea and anxiety. You would first use inhaled essential oils (QueaseEASE, containing peppermint, ginger, lavender, and spearmint, and STILL) as needed for 12 weeks. After that, you would use a wearable TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) device called ReliefBand on your wrist for another 12 weeks. Researchers want to understand how these interventions affect nausea, anxiety, sleep, pain, and other related symptoms. To join, you must be 18 or older, have had chronic nausea for over 6 months, experience nausea frequently, have severe nausea, and have at least moderate anxiety. The study aims to enroll 250 participants.

Study design
This interventional study will enroll 250 participants. It involves a sequence of using essential oils followed by a TENS device.
What's involved
You would first have a 2-week baseline period, then use essential oils for 12 weeks, followed by a TENS device for 12 weeks. Throughout, you'll complete symptom surveys.
Compensation
Not stated in the trial record.
Follow-up
Your anxiety severity will be measured up to 3 months after using the essential oils and up to 3 months after using the TENS unit.

  • Change in Anxiety Severity as a Potential Mechanism of Chronic NauseaBaseline through 3 months

Change in anxiety severity from baseline during inhaled essential oil use assessed using the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) questionnaire. Modulation of anxiety severity is hypothesized as a mechanism by which Inhaled essential oils affect chronic Nausea
