Behavioral Activation for Depression in Senior Centers

This study is looking at two ways to help older adults with depression in senior centers. It compares "Do More, Feel Better" (DMFB), which is a simplified form of Behavioral Activation delivered by trained volunteers, with Behavioral Activation delivered by master's level clinicians. Behavioral Activation helps people re-engage in enjoyable activities to reduce depression. We want to see if the volunteer-led approach works as well as the clinician-led one. You might be able to join if you are 60 or older, attend a participating senior center in Seattle, NYC, or Tampa, and have symptoms of depression. Success will be measured by changes in your depression symptoms and activity levels over time. The current recruitment status is unclear.

  • Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAM-D)Change from Baseline HAM-D at 3, 6, 9, 24, and 36 weeks after treatment starts

The HAM-D will be used as measure of depressive symptom severity. The HAM-D is a clinically administered measure and has been validated in a variety of psychiatric populations.

  • Behavioral Activation Scale (BADS)Change from Baseline BADS at 3, 6, 9, 24, and 36 weeks after treatment starts

The BADS will be used as the primary target measure, and yields a total score reflecting level of engagement in reinforcing activities. The BADS has shown good psychometric properties; studies have validated the BADS as a mechanism by which behavioral activation interventions reduces depression.
